Found throughout
the island. A
ground dweller,
preferring forests
and adkoining
scrunbs and plantations.
Fairly commonin
suitable habitats
and, although
shy, frequently
feeds in the open.
Easiest to see
in dry zone. The
cock's loud chock,
chaw-choyik is
heard especially
in the mornings.
Often seen in
family parties.
A game drive in
one of the southern
national parks
will usually locates
this bird. Unlike
glossy black and
orange-yellow
male, female is
drab brown, and
reminiscent ot
male Sri Lanka
Spurfowl (Galloperdix
bicalcarata) buthas
clear off-white
bars on the wing,
and yellowish
legs and beak.
