Sri Lanka White-eye
(Ceylon Hill White-eye)
Zosterops ceylonensis
(Endangered).
Endemic. A fairly
common species
in home gardens
and forests in
the higher hills.
Occurs in small,
and at times,
large flocks which
forage on tall
trees as well
as in low bushes.
A nucleus species
in bird waves.
The soft chirping
call is one of
the most familiar
in th higher hills:
a short, cheerful
cheeyup with a
trilling quality,
which has a few
slight variations.
In some areas
it descends to
forests in the
lower hills as
in Sinharaja where
it mixes with
Oriental White-eye
(Zosterops paopebrosa).
It is a little
larger, and greener
and darker than
Oriental White-eye
and has broader
white eye-ring.
